Young people and those potential leaders of the future face substantial social and psychological impacts because of war trauma. This can result in harm to normal development and potentially mental health disorders, specifically those associated with stress, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Key partners include a team led by Professor Paul Miller MD, psychiatrist, and psychological trauma expert, who with a team of experienced international psychotraumatologists bring decades of experience and a genuine passion and calling in helping others.
The project will involve training therapists and other non-mental health professionals such as teachers, clergy, police officers, paramedics, ambulance, and fire-service personnel in trauma capacity building.
This team in partnership with OSMTH Grand Priory of Ukraine will identify and prioritise where to focus their activities, ensuring that the areas of greatest need are effectively and efficiently responded to early in the project roll out.
The mission will focus on locations close to the border with Poland, in the Lviv region and in Poland. Our aim is to provide training that can be applied by local therapists and other non-mental health professionals such as teachers, clergy, police officers, paramedics, ambulance, and fire-service personnel, to increase their ability to identify those suffering from psychological disorders because of war trauma (including but not limited to PTSD), and at the same time provide them with an EMDR Early Intervention (EEI) skills. The EEI will equip professionals with a means of effective treatment intervention and at the same time it functions as a triage tool, identifying those at need of more expert interventions. By addressing trauma proactively, we can off-set the impact of trauma and minimise the potential for trauma to be passed down through generations, a consequence seen in other significant conflicts.
By providing Ukrainian therapists and non-mental health professionals with the training and tools to deal with trauma we can hasten the recovery process and in due course equip these professionals to rebuild the country one mind at a time.
Ukrainian children and teenagers rehabilitation with “Leader in Me” approach.
Our children are our futurе. They need not only physical protection from Russian military aggression but also emotional and phycological.
• We really understand Ukrainian youth needs and have deep practical experience teaching Ukrainian children age 6 – 18 years with “Leader in Me” approach.
• Furthermore, due to the current issue of war time we involved professional psychologists and adopted solutions with “do and not-to-do” red lines while teaching.
During our project we are able to
– help teens to feel safe in new conditions;
– identify and adapt professional skills to new needs;
– feel and realize themself as a full part of the new team, regardless of age and status.
The Ukrainian Renaissance Foundation (URF) is an international foundation founded in 2022 as response to the needs of the millions of people displaced and injured in the current conflict in Ukraine.
The major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War in February 2022 has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people, displaced a substantial number of the population and caused the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. An estimated 8 million people have been displaced within the country by late May, with 7.8 million Ukrainians forced to flee the country as of 8th November 2022. One month of war in Ukraine has led to the displacement of 4.3 million children – more than half of the country’s estimated 7.3 million children.
URF has been founded to unite and co-ordinate resources to serve as a mechanism for generating a trauma capacity building programme for Ukraine. This programme will equip professionals and the communities they serve to help in the rehabilitation and recovery of the people of Ukraine and all those impacted by this conflict. As an organisation committed to humanitarian work, URF with our international partners will equip and empower our partners in Ukraine and build a portfolio of skills and knowledge that can provide immediate, medium- and long-term benefits, for children and young people as well as adults.
To provide professionals, educators, and children, including refugee and internally displaced children, and the children of combatants, with training, coaching and tools to support their psychosocial and emotional needs, enhancing resilience and building positive mental health, essential for meeting their immediate needs and facilitating long-term recovery.

Christ is born in order to participate in our suffering and that He may retain our humanity and dignity. Even if the world brings darkness and hopelessness, we Christians are to carry the light of hope in a polycrisis world. The Babe of Bethlehem exhorts us from his manger: Do not lose hope. Be beacons of hope here in midst of suffering and oppression. For God acts in history as God acted in Christmas and will sooner than we think grant us peace based on justice. As the Angels of Bethlehem sang:
“Glory to God in the Highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom He favors.” (Luke 2:14)
I wish you all A Merry Christmas and A Blessed New Year 2023 full of peace and justice.
